1979年よりKCIで学芸部門の仕事に関わる。1990年よりチーフ・キュレーターとして収集、保存、研究、公開などの学芸全般の活動を統括する。1996年理事に就任。

略歴

お茶の水女子大学、並びに同大学院修士課程にて西洋服装史を専攻。その後パリ第４大学（ソルボンヌ）で美術史を専攻。
1979年より京都服飾文化研究財団に勤務。現在、同財団理事、チーフ・キュレーター。
1989年に京都国立近代美術館で開催されたロココ時代の衣装の展覧会「華麗な革命展」は高い評価を得、ニューヨーク、パリにも招聘された。
同年、「華麗な革命展」の開催・実施の功績が認められ、毎日ファッション大賞特別賞、FEC賞（日本エディターズクラブ）を受賞。
1994年同館で開催の「モードのジャポニスム展」は、西洋のファッションの上にいかに日本が影響を与え続けてきたかを初めて明らかにし、東西文化交流の研究やファッションの流れに大きな影響を与えた。これはパリ、東京、ロサンゼルス、ニューヨーク、ニュージーランドでも開催された。
1999年には京都国立近代美術館と東京都現代美術館で「身体の夢　ファッションOR見えないコルセット展」を開催。
2004年４月から京都国立近代美術館で、８月から森美術館で「COLORS ファッションと色彩」展を開催。
2004年には、お茶の水女子大学から「お茶の水女子大学名誉博士」の称号を授与。2002年に制定されたこの名誉博士称号は、学術文化の発展および国際的文化交流について特に顕著な貢献があった人物に贈られている。
2008年、西欧服飾の研究者として活躍し、なかでもファッションにおけるジャポニスム研究の第一人者として、我が国の服飾界の発展に貢献したことが評され、文化庁長官表彰を受賞。
2009年4月より京都国立近代美術館、同年10月より東京都現代美術館にて「ラグジュアリー：ファッションの欲望」展を開催。

1989年毎日ファッション大賞特別賞、FEC賞（日本エディターズクラブ）受賞。

Akiko FUKAI

Working from 1979 at the KCI, a chief curator since 1990, a director since 1996. Supervised the collection, conservation, research, publishing and exhibitions. Organized several major fashion exhibitions in Kyoto, Tokyo, Paris, and New York, and supervised the catalogues.

Brief Summary of Fukai's Career

Currently Chief Curator of the Kyoto Costume Institute, Fukai majored in the History of Western Costume at the National University of Ochanomizu in Tokyo(master's degree), and studied Art History at the Universite de Paris 4 (Institute des Arts et de l'Archeologie) in Paris. Fukai has organized several major costume exhibitions in Kyoto, Tokyo, Paris, and New York, including "Revolution in Fashion," "Japonism in Fashion," "Visions of the Body" and "Fashion in Colors," "Luxury in fashion Resonsidered." She has conducted extensive research on the relationship between fashion and Japonism and was given in 2000 a special prize by the Academy of Japonism in Japan, honorable doctor degree of the National University of Ochanomizu(2004), Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award, Japan (2008).
She was associate professor of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Kyoto), professor of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, lecturer of Tokyo University, Rikkyo University.
Fukai is the author and editor of many books including Japonism in Fashion, Heibonsha, 1994, Fashion, Taschen, 2002, The Century of Fashion, Heibonsha, 2005, and Reading Fashion from Pictures, PHP Institute, 2009.
